A Tribe Called Run Code of Conduct
A Tribe Called Run (ATCR) is an all-paces social community of runners who co-create a welcoming environment for all athletes. Through the sport of running, we support each other and connect by building friendships, celebrating each other, and holding each other accountable.
Purpose
ATCR strives to create a fun and supportive environment where everyone feels welcome. This code of conduct is intended to ensure everyone who participates in the ATCR community has a shared understanding of how to contribute to a welcoming and inclusive environment for all participants as well as the consequences for unacceptable behavior. The framework in which this code of conduct is designed is rooted in restorative justice, a process that focuses on repairing harm, promoting healing, and fostering accountability by bringing together those affected by an offense—the victim, the offender, and community members—to discuss what happened and decide what needs to be done. Restorative justice centers victims' needs, encouraging offenders to take personal responsibility, and involving the community in finding solutions.
Scope
We expect all community participants (contributors, paid or otherwise; sponsors; and other guests) to abide by this Code of Conduct in all community venues—in-person and online.
Expected Behavior
Contribute to exchanges of mutual respect. Respect each other at all times, and enable a welcoming and supportive environment that is free from harassment and intimidation during runs, on social media and other ATCR sanctioned events.
Contribute to a culture of consent. Ask for consent before initiating physical contact with other community members, talking about their bodies or appearance, or touching anyone’s personal belongings.
Contribute to community care and safety. Look after each other—be mindful of your surroundings and of your fellow participants. Support each other and let the captains or other runners know if you encounter a dangerous situation, someone in distress, see another runner struggling/injured, or violations of this Code of Conduct, even if they seem inconsequential.
Contribute to honoring each other's identities. Be respectful of each other's identities. ATCR fosters an inclusive and welcoming environment for all participants, including members of the LGBTQIA+ community. All our bodies, gender identities, gender expressions and sexual orientations are valid and equal. Don’t assume pronoun usage--ask if you are unsure. Be mindful to address members of our community by the name and pronouns that they share with the community.
Unacceptable Behaviors
The following behaviors are unacceptable within our community:
Violence, physical violence, threats of violence or violent language directed against another person.
Sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist or otherwise discriminatory jokes and language.
Posting or displaying sexually explicit or violent material.
Personal insults, particularly those related to gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, or disability.
Inappropriate photography or recording.
Non-consensual physical contact. You should have someone’s consent before touching them.
Unwelcome sexual attention. This includes, sexualized comments or jokes; inappropriate touching, groping, and unwelcome sexual advances.
Deliberate intimidation, stalking or following (online or in person).
Reporting Code of Conduct Violations
If you are subject to or witness unacceptable behavior, or have any other concerns, please notify a Captain as soon as possible. Participants are encouraged to report to any ATCR run captains to address the issue and make corrective actions where necessary. You can find contact information for ATCR leadership at the bottom of this page. Participants are responsible to report grievances to ATCR leadership and use personal judgement if further escalation is necessary for immediate safety. If you are in danger, call 911.
Consequences of Unacceptable Behavior
Unacceptable behavior from any community member, including sponsors and those with decision-making authority, will not be tolerated.
Anyone asked to stop unacceptable behavior is expected to comply immediately. If a community member engages in unacceptable behavior, the Leadership Team may decide to take any action they deem appropriate, up to and including a temporary ban or permanent expulsion from the community.
ATCR believes in restorative justice and accountability for harmful actions. If a moderated mediation, group circle, or other restorative practice is appropriate and all parties are willing, such practices may take place. Participants are welcome to suggest or ask for such practices, which will be considered and decided upon by the Leadership Team.
Temporary Ban or Permanent Expulsion
ATCR leadership will share a transparent process with participants involved in any grievance, which may require temporary or permanent expulsion. Participants receiving a decision of temporary ban or permanent expulsion will refrain from participation in all ATCR runs and events. If you feel you have been falsely or unfairly accused of violating this Code of Conduct, you should notify an ATCR captain with a description of your grievance. Your grievance will be reviewed and addressed in a timely manner.
